Authentic Japanese Accommodations At A Ryokan

When you travel to Japan you have a myriad of accommodations options from which to choose. Many of them are Western name brand hotels, but you can’t beat the experience of staying in an authentic Ryokan. A Ryokan is a Japanese style resort or inn. It’s not only a unique accommodation; it gives guests the chance to experience Japanese culture at its richest.

The Japanese when traveling through their country often stay at a Ryokan. It is a relaxing experience and you should make plans to stay in one for at least one night when you are in Japan. A Ryokan have traditional and formal rules of behavior. To truly savor your Ryokan experience it is wise to research what will be expected of you before you arrive.

Stepping Inside a Ryokan

No shoes are allowed inside the Ryokan. Your shoes should be removed at the entrance and slippers will be provided. The staff welcome you with the phrase “Nakai-san” and once you are checked in you will be taken to your room.

The interior of a Ryokan room is styled in traditional Japanese motif. The floor has a Tatami mat and you are not permitted to step on this with your slippers on your feet. When you are shown your room by the staff of the Ryokan, they will give you all the information you need to know and tell you when to expect to eat and when the hours of bathing are available.

In your room you will be provided with a robe like a Kimono called a Yukata. You can wear it as your pajamas or stroll around the Ryokan using it as a robe. As a special treat, you will find in your room a dish with complimentary candies to sweeten the experience.
